Description
The New York State Office of Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) oversees a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification. This certification requires a combination of 350 hours of training from an OASAS approved provider, 6000 professional hours of supervised, full-time equivalent experience in an approved work setting (though applicants may substitute some of these hours if they hold a complete degree in a human service field), and successful completion of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Examination for Alcohol and Drug Counselors.
Additionally, OASAS developed the CASAC-T certificate as an interim credential for counselors who have the 350 hours of OASAS approved training required for the CASAC, but have yet to complete the CASAC requirement of 6000 practicum hours. Training programs for the CASAC-T are either at a regionally-accredited community college or at a training provider based within the community. Both utilize the same standardized 350-hour curriculum.
