The Certified Peer Worker Training Program is part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2014 initiative to end the AIDS epidemic in New York State. The Certified Peer Worker training program conducted through the New York State Department of Health contains three specialized tracks: HIV, Hepatitis C, and Harm Reduction. In order to become certified, candidates must successfully complete three components: a core program of 61.5 hours; at least one specialized secondary focus in either HIV, Hep C or Harm Reduction; and a 500-hour practicum. Once those requirements are fulfilled, the candidate must successfully pass a 30-question multiple-choice exam and submit an application to a review board in order to be certified as a peer worker.
